Series Introduction

Cruel Angel's Thesis, or the original title, Zankoku na Tenshi no Teeze, is the opening theme song of the famous anime/manga franchise, Shin Seiki Evangelion, or in English, Neon Genesis Evangelion. Set fourteen years after a (fictional) horrific incident that killed almost half of the human population. the series follows the life of a fourteen year old boy, Shinji Ikari, who is asked by his father to become the "Third Child" and to pilot an Evangelion, a machine capable of defeating the threat to mankind, the "Angels".

However, Shinji is not what one calls a "hero". Abandoned by his father when he was a child, Shinji hates himself and believes that his existence in the world is meaningless. In order to inspire him and to teach him that his existence is important, his new captain, the beautiful Misato Kurasagi, forces him to live with her, where she hopes they will somehow become a family and start to rely on each other. But can love and care from Misato, who also suffers from other issues, really teach Shinji to care about himself? Or will Shinji's wounds caused by past abandonment and self-hatred win over his mind and destroy any will he might of have to save the world? And, even if Shinji does start to care for himself, does he really have what he takes to be a hero and save mankind? Directed by Hideaki Anno, the series started running its anime series, the first of the franchise, on October 1995. Besides an anime, it also has a manga series, and I think, three movies.
